peter_phillips2
I own a Summicron-M f2 35mm. "Made in Canada" lens. I bought it a couple of years ago in a v. reputable camera shop here in Adelaide. For the first time last night I realised that it doesn't have a number on the inner ring, nor, so far as I can see, anywhere else. Advice, please. sal dimarco
Peter, Look around the outer edges of the lens. There is a serial number on the lens. It is one of the many Leica mysteries why they chose to engrave it there.Happy Snaps,
albert_smith
Peter... I have this lens and also could not at first find the number. With the lens removed from the camera, focus the lens to its minimum distance (which causes it to extend a bit). Look at the aperture ring and find the f/16 mark. Move around the ring from f/16 about 120 degrees and look at the back of the aperture ring. The serial number will be there.
andy_piper2
Yep - bottom back side of the aperture ring - opposite the aperture numbers. As to WHY it's there instead of around the front element - by the time Leica squeezed "LEITZ LENS MADE IN CANADA SUMMICRON-M 1:2/35" inside the 39mm filter ring there was no room left for a 7-digit number. And I guess the knurled mount ring closest to the camera was also too thin (some Canadian lenses have the number there). The Canadian Tele-Elmarit 90 also has the number on the aperture ring, for the same reason - and says "Lens made in Canada" in two different places - I guess they were proud. Took me a while to find my number, too. As soon as I read your title I knew which lens you owned. 8^)
