Meter the sky to one side or other of the sun (but excluding the sun), which will retain the lightness of colour withut the image being underexposed by the sun's brightness. Remember most things between you and the sun will be silhouetted in your final image so dont 'chop' off the botom of legs, trees etc

This is not answering your question, but a tip. Right after sunset, turn around 180 degrees and watch for an Earth's shadow. A few years ago my son and I were at a national wildlife refuge and there were numerous photographers with their 500 and 600 Canon lenses waiting for sunrises and sunsets. I was aware of the near full moon and thus my son and I photographed full moons within Earth's shadows and the pictures were great. Those photographers with their multi-thousand dollar lenses had no idea what they missed.

Google Atmospheric Optics website. Sunsets are always a good subject, but there is so much more.
