radiotyson
Hey Everyone,

I recently got my Nikon d300s (refurbished) from adorama - Love it.

However, When I insert a CF card the camera wont turn on, and if I put the card in when the camera is already on it locks up. No LCD, no menus no shutter nuthin.

I have tried 2 different CF cards that both work in my buddy's 5d.

You think this is a camera defect or am I just missing some menu option somewhere?

Thanks!
Kent Shafer
You should reformat the card in the camera since Nikon's formatting setup is presumably different than Canon's. That will be a challenge, though, if the camera won't even turn on. Is the battery charged?

The camera should be switched off while you remove or insert cards.
radiotyson
Camera works beautifully with an SDHC card in it.
I have tried it with no SD card in at the same time - same problem.
Reformatting CF (kingston 8gb 133x brand new) now....
Ed_Ingold
Reformat the card FAT32 using a computer and card reader/writer, then reformat it in the camera. If that doesn't work, I've had compatibility problems with Kingston cards in the past. Some would not work with a D2h, even if formatted outside the camera. Sandisk cards work with everything (so far).

frank_skomial
" if I put the card in when the camera is already on" - you are well on the way to disaster....

You could damage the memory card, or the camera.

Follow step-by-step directions from your camera manual.
ShunCheung
What type of CF cards are those, which brand and capacity?

I would find yet another Sandisk or Lexar memory card, preferably between 1G to 16G. Format it on a computer and see whether you can format it again inside the camera. If that still does not work and the card works on other cameras, most likely the problem is in your new, refuberished D300S.
Jerry_
You could take a flashlight and see if anything looks like a bent pin is in the CF card slot.

As noted above: return the camera for a replacement or refund.

michael_bradtke
I use Kingston cards in my D300 all the time. Never had any problems. I have also swapped cards with out turning the camera off on several occasions. Never had a problem. I am not saying its what I normally do but it is not something I am afraid of doing.
If it where me I would be on the phone with who ever I bought it from to get a RMA and send it back.
