Elinchrom 74" Octa on Hensel Lights...

Good day and thanks...
I have a 120v set of the Hensel Integra 500's and I'd really like to purchase the Elinchrom 74' Octa-bank to put on one of the heads.
I'm having a bear of a time finding out if I need an adapter, if there is one made, I can't find it.
Thank you again.

Not sure about a speedring to make Elinchrom fit Hensel, but what about looking at the Photoflex 7' Octodome? It's only $328.95 at BH Photo, and you could find out if their Hensel speedring adapter would fit your Integras. It doesn't list the Integra, but that doesn't mean it won't fit--it may not have been updated to reflect that. BH should be able to answer that.

Thank you Devon, I read the reviews here and it seems to be a very simular diffusion device and is what I'm looking for at 1/3 the price. I may give this a go.
I do worry about one thing. My spine and back are in very, very bad shape, one thing that was so appealing about the Octa-bank was the ease of opening and closing because of the "Unbrella" design. How is the Photoflex to open/Close?

Again, thank you.

The Photoflex OctoDomes set up and tears down basically like any other softbox, just with double the rods. Some models have a "quick-release" system where you do the speedring with basically no tension and then pull the rods into a pocket (much like setting up a tent). I don't know if that would be easier on your back or not; if you've got a dealer nearby, it might be worth seeing if you could try one out.

Elinchrom makes an adapter that will allow you to mount most heads using the umbrella shaft, but I haven't used it personally as I've always used the Octa with Profotos (which have their own adapter). Part number from Bogen/Elinchrom US is WF 26240M, MSRP is $85. I can't imagine the Integras would be too large to fit.

Colin, thank you for taking the time.
The reason that I've asked is that when I borrowed Joe McNally's 74" Octa-bank it was almost a breeze as it opens and closes, all in ONE piece, just like an umbrella where as a "normal" soft-box has it's cloth pulled over the "rods" one these rods are set up into the ring.
This allows me to simply again, unzip the bag, take out the umbrella (Octa-bank) and mount it onto the light-head. I happen to be an odd case because of all the damage and work done on my spine.
THank you again Colin.

Yep, my own preference is for the Eli Octabank. Sometimes the lock can be tricky, but it's otherwise an absolute breeze to set up and tear down. The quick-release Photoflexes are definitely an improvement over standard softboxes but they pale in comparison to the Eli.

Another good idea might be to call Bogen (who distributes and supports Elinchrom gear in the US). Their number's (201) 818-0060. It's possible they have some idea what specific third-party strobes will fit the Octabank using the adapter. With the Integra being so similar in size to Elinchrom's own monolights, I can't imagine it wouldn't work—it's not like trying to stuff a White Lightning in there.

Hi Devon, I have these little tiny matchbox cars, their about 3 1/2 inches. Do you remember them as a kid?
I just want to make sure I have to wrap around them correctly......

...........yes, I'm kidding. My back no longer works but my humor is still sticking around and I'm keeping it dang it!
I've mentioned before about Joe McNally's big octa-bank. Ever since I've used it both in and out of the studio (I've set up a studio on site) I've simply been in love with the quality of light this specific fabric brings with it.
After a very agressive PT schedule I have over the next two months I hope to be in the studio once again, but the bottom line is I'd like to avoid a battery pack solution. I'd be nice at the beach but I'll rent that when I do that later in the year.
I have some model shots I've taken with this box downstairs that I'll post later tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
Tom

Devon, Just want to make sure I really stress this, I'm in the camp of "The larger the light, the softer the light" only because I've seen so much studio stuff I just have to agree.
But, there is just something about this specific light, never have I seen it off at any spot of the entire diffuser, using a Elichrom head. (The only source I've seen attached to this specific box)
So, for me, it's not the subject size at all, it's the size and this specific light.

The Octa's amazing light is largely a result of it's mounting - the head is mounted inside the box, and reflected off the back of the box. The result is a beautifully diffused light. To my knowledge, other soft banks are traditional forward mounted, so the effect will be hard to match.
Yes, it's expensive, but after just ten minutes of working with it I was convinced to order one for a studio project.

 • 1 month later...

I found the solution and it's a simple $24 part.
It's the Interfit to Hensel lighting system adapter. By the looks of this adapter it can take any modifier and adapt it to Hensel and of course, Interfit makes adapters for most light heads. It fits like a glove however it will not allow the modifer to fold like an umbrella, but for $24, I'll live with it.

Tom,
This is David Fu. I bought a Crown Graphic with a 135 Optar from you on APUG. You said the camera was damaged in transit and returned to you. You said you would refund my money immediately and apologized profusely. That was on June 12th. I haven't received a single email from you with pictures of the damages like you said you would, nor have a received my refund. You haven't returned any of my messages on APUG so I've had to resort to chasing you around on the internet. What's going on?

David! I've not been on APUG for ages, no need to, I mailed your MO to your brother the very next day!!! I sent out 4 cameras that day, some much more expensive then the Crown, the crown was damaged in transit via UPS.
Why did you not go into my profile on Apug and pull my email address?
email me at dwdmguy AT optonoline DOT net
This is not the place for this.

Tom,
I don't use photo.net for emails. I've sent you three emails from my email account davidave (AT) gmail (DOT) com and ALL of them have gone unanswered. Quite frankly I'm tired of playing these games with you. If you have sent the MO then provide a tracking number or proof of delivery. Excuse me if I don't believe everything you're going to say you'll do because I haven't seen ANYTHING from you.

Re: Crown Graphic

Tom,

It's been 13 days since your last message and I have neither received any emails from you nor the money order.

I am just curious how you would feel if the shoe were on the other foot. I paid you well over a month ago and never received a tracking number. I was continuously promised a tracking number for a week, and at the end of that week I was notified that the item was RETURNED TO SENDER.

Then I have your continual apologies and guarantees that the refund money order will be sent out "immediately" and yet here we are 13 days later with nothing to show.

A less patient person would have certainly jumped to some conclusions. For some reason, I've been willing to give you the benefit of doubt. However my patience is running thin and if we cannot resolve this issue within the next couple of days, I will be alerting the forum moderators of this problem.

Best,

David

Tom,

I tried to find your email on APUG but it's not there, at least not with the type account I have. If you mailed the MO on the 17th, you'll need to track it down because nothing was ever received on my end. Did you send it via certified mail? or with tracking?

Tom you mistyped your own email address. The first time it was optonOline.net and the second time it was optonline.net. Why can't you just log onto APUG? That was how I was communicating with you until you went AWOL.
