george_sanderson
I have been using Epson scan with my Epson V700 with no problems. I decided to give the bundled Silverfast a go and can't get a scanned image. What happens is that I get a scan of the film holder with the negatives in it but no images. Any suggestions, please?
peterbcarter
Select the general tab, the make sure your "original" is set to Transparency. The sets the scanner in the appropriate mode, like turning on the light source etc.
george_sanderson
Peter - many thanks. I can see where I was going wrong. I had a few frustrating hours scanning the manual, amongst other things. I find Epsonscan easier to use with post processing in Photoshop. Is there any real advantage in using Silverfast?
peterbcarter
It depends on your work flow. I bought it twice (Ai Studio for Epson and Plustek) and then found out that I really love Vuescan much more. For me its not a question of what is better, it's what I can get my best scan out of. I find Epson scan too simple and Silverfast too complicated and resource intensive. You will find others that swear by something else.

Scanning is a long learning curve. Just take your time and find what advantages the software can provide by how *you* do things.

These days I mostly do raw scans. VuescanPro and AiStudio (called HDR in their lingo) can do them, but Epson scan (to my knowledge) cannot. I do the conversion in PS with ColorPerfect plug-in. After using that plug-in, its hard to watch any scanning software do it for you. If raw is your niche, VuescanPro is by far the cheapest and best choice.
