angus_ngtg
Wanted to ask if any of you own the 135 mm 3.4 M, APO lens and what your experiences are with this lens and it's usefulness and performance in the field. Interested in hearing from owners of this lens who have used it and know the pros and cons. Many thanks,Tom
jay_.
Have owned it since they first came out. Pros: superlative optics, excellent ergonomics. Cons: not one iota better than the f/4 Tele-Elmar but costs 4x an early version and 1.5x the late version (same optics).
jackflesher
For pros, I'll simply say the optics are incredible at all f-stops. Also, it is a bit lighter in weight over its predecessors, and half a stop faster. The only con I can come up with is that it uses E49 filters, not E46's. frank
Borrowed an APO 135/3.4 to compare it with my own 135/4 (last pre APO version). Slides were nearly indistinguishable. Used it on a grey and rainy day. The pics with the APO were bit more contrasty, not much but visible (only to be seen in direct comparison). I would't upgrade my "old" 135/4 with an APO 135/3.4 because the differences between both lenses are too small. Best
chi_cheung
I had both the APO and the first version Tele-Elmar. I found the Apo's color are cleaner (white is pure white) where the Tele-Elmar has a touch of warmmer tin to the slide. It could be the lead content in the glass or simply the coating difference. lou_mcclellan
I have an APO and a Tele-Elmar. There is something magical about the Apo. Color and sharpness are breathtaking, even wide open. I have decided to sell the APO because though I want to have a 135mm available, I use it too seldom to justify the cost. $1200 as new with box, case, caps includes shipping in lower US. 10 Day money back. The Tele-Elmar is pretty darn good too. Lou
jason
FWIW i have the Tele-Elmar 135mm f4,pre APO. As these, the 135mm, are the least popular lenses of the M,suggest saving a whole bag of money and buying the older used one. My 135mm is devistatingly sharp, the colors magical. Very hard to compose in my M6 but easy in old Ziggy(M3). See no point in a sharper lens....I cannot use it for paying clients without diffussion!
