"Scrapbook Videos" - Getting Started

My wife has decided that she'd like to try her hand at

producing "scrapbook videos" and, being the resident photographer,

she thinks I should also know the video side. Since I don't I

thought I'd ask about starting places here.

What is a good source for determining everything she would need to

get into this?

Basically, we would need to be able to scan photos (flatbed scanner),

accept other pre-shot video, either VHS, Hi8, Digital8, DV, add

background music, produce a master tape and then do multiple copies

to VHS or other formats (maybe even DVD).

I know the obvious things: DV camera, firewire for the mac, iMovie or

Adobe (or other) editing software. Will probably need additional hard

drives (80GB SCSI, 10000 rmp). What else? What are good sources for

information and pricing?

Thanks,

Jim Sanders

Jim, you got the DV part down, but how to you plan to transfer in the analog VHS and Hi8 videos? I assume you plan to use a MAC to do the editing, which is great since it ready for DV editing since it has built in Firewire and comes equipped with I-movie. However it does not have any analog capturing capabilities. Your answer for capture analog video (VHS, Hi8 etc) are:

1. Have your analog videos transferred onto digital DV tapes then import them into I-movie.

2. Get a device out there (I am sorry I forget its name) that will allow you to plug in a regular VHS vcr through the firewire port, its an analog/digital converter, and capture it that way.

3. Buy an analog video capture card for the MAC, assuming you're not using an IMAC, then I don't know if they make any external analog video capture devices.

Also from my experience you can use a 7200rpm HD with no problems.

I'm sorry I can't provide any more information than that, I do mostly photography (not videography) related work so I don't know any VIDEO editing sources on the web you can turn to off the top of my head....though I'm pretty sure there are others here that can provide that information.

Hope what I wrote helps.
