Kent Shafer
I want to mount a 200mm f/2 AFS VR lens on a Wimberley II head. Should I get the Kirk LP-51 replacement foot, or would a plate from Wimberley or another manufacturer be preferable? I'm concerned that the Kirk foot might not be long enough to balance with various bodies, with and without motor drives. Thanks.
Kent Shafer
I think I've answered my own question by studying the pictures on Kirk's website, which I should have done in the first place. The Kirk foot appears to be plenty long.
andy a.
Both the Kirk and RRS feet are quite long.

I would add that the shortness of the 200/2 makes hand-holding more comfortable than you would think, though I suppose a wimberley would be better still.
Kent Shafer
Update: I got the Kirk foot, and it isn't long enough to balance the lens on the head. (I misinterpreted Kirk's photos—my fault and not theirs, though it would be nice if they published the foot's length.) The Kirk foot is about 3.25" long.

I have now realized that RRS also makes a replacement foot. Their site says it's 4.5" long, which should be much better. I will return the Kirk and get the RRS instead.

Both the Kirk and the RRS feet will allow the hood to be reversed and stored on the lens. That wouldn't work with the OEM foot plus a plate.
Kent Shafer
Final update: Got the RRS foot. It's just right. Easily balances the lens with a D700 plus battery pack.
