Medium format equipment for nature photograpy

After reading David's posts, it would appear that the camera club is really only objecting to the use of sharp, high-quality lenses, since, as per his arguments, the lens sharpness issue seems to be the only difference between a 35mm slide and a 24x36mm piece cropped out of a 6x6 slide film.

Does this mean that people using Leica and Contax equipment should also be disqualified from the club competitions? After all, their lenses will give more sharpness and contrast than some of the less expensive lens brands. Using Canon "L" lenses and Nikon "ED" glass woud be cheating, too. I guess the club members should stick to cheap, consumer-grade 35mm zoom lenses, and "concentrate on aquiring good technique as opposed to falsely relying on a larger format to hide their poorer ones".

The notion that taking picures on medium-format film and cutting it down to 35mm size somehow gives one better pictures is silly, and many of us in the local photographic community had a good laugh over this when the camera club issued this edict. Why wouldn't they jsut judge the images on their merits, instead of trying to find out if there were sprocket holes under the slide mounts?
