chad_goldman
I've hit the stage where I am learning about off camera lighting. The D50 does not have a commander mode, but I can set the SB600 to Slave.
I've did some searching and looking at strobist.com and came up with this:
http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11447.html
It is a Cactus V2s combo.
Price is a factor, and If I could I'd be shooting for pocket wizards or something. Those may come later.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Cactus, as Mpex does not have a user comment on this item. or what I'm attempting to do. I am not a pro, but do shoot a few photos for friends. I do want to experiment and practice with a setup similar to this, i just want to be traveling in the right direction.
I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks
Chad Goldman
sonja_greene
I have the same camera and flash. I don't have experience with the radio tx you are speaking of, but I do have a simple and cheap one I bought at my (now out of business) camera store. It's the greatest thing since sliced cheese. I use it for all my portrait set ups. I used to attach it to my portable flash units like the SunPak 383 and set the sb600 with an optical slave unit. I now use it with my studio flash units. As far as cheap units, they are very basic and get the job done. If you end up wanting to spend more money, you can have more control depending on what features you flash heads have.
Peter_in_PA
SB-600 doesn't have any slave mode other than Nikon CLS. So no, it won't act as a basic slave. At all.

you'll need some other product.
gdw
Do a search for Cactus on Stobist and you'll have enough opinions to keep you reading for the next week. Everything my might ever want to know and them some.
kris-bochenek
I bought a set of Cactus V2s radio triggers and I've been using them with SB600's and 900. They seem to work very well, the only thing is to keep your shutter speed a pinch below your max synch. I try to keep mine at 200 although 250 works as well.
chad_goldman
I've done some more reading and found the V4's to be very highly recommended. I think i'm going to give them a try. Thanks all for the advice.
Kris, I'll keep the SS in mind as I work with the new gear.
