NEF Codecs in window 7 64

Just last week I switched from Vista to Windows 7 Professional and downloaded the 32bit codec from the Nikon site (http://nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/ .) . Why would anyone get a codec anywhere else when the codec is available from the OEM at no charge. To me that dosen't make any logical sense.

The codec worked without the slightest hitch.

According to Microsoft ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/32-bit-64-bit-faq.aspx.)

“Most programs designed for a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows will work on a computer running 64-bit versions of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs, and some hardware drivers.

Drivers designed for 32-bit versions of Windows don't work on computers running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you're trying to install a printer or other device that only has 32-bit drivers available, it won't work correctly on a 64-bit version of Windows. For information about updating drivers and troubleshooting issues with device drivers for 64-bit versions of Windows, contact the manufacturer of the device or program. “

I will admit that I got a leg up from a friend that suggested going with the Windows 7 Professional instead of the Home Edition if I wanted to run some of my older software. I do not know if Windows 7 Home Edition supports both 64bit and 32bit but that might be your problem. Never the less if I were you, based on the information from Microsoft, I would sure try the download from Nikon before I got too concerned.

Gary, the reason why your friend suggested Win7 Professional is that Microsoft enables virtualization of 32bit Windows XP for your version of windows. You still have to download a ~600Mb file from Microsoft, though. And it still won't work for drivers, although it could be possible that you had your printer working in virtual XP but not working in the host OS (64bit 7). Of course, your processor will have to support virtualization (and no, not all the new intel processors do, it's a market segmentation tool for them).

Back to topic, I'd try the Nikon codec, no matter what Nikon says. Try to install it and then try to open a NEF file with Photo Gallery. If the picture viewer crashes, well, Nikon was right. If it doesn't an you get the right colours, enjoy!
