POW, 1/31/10

shots worth sharing

Recommended Posts

Wow, it's 7:30 EST & no POW? So let's get it on! Here are a couple from yesterday
First, yet another bird: I got close with the 400mm f2.8 & 1.4x TC on the monopod and got more of the kind of detail I'm after--despite the high iso. There are those blown out patches of snow, of course--but I found a use for one of them.

Dave - Ahh, you're right, I'd had 0 cuppas.
Bob - I shouldn't complain about the cold with guys like you around. I didn't drive to the Catskill area yesterday because I didn't want my car to spend the night outdoors in the real cold. The 'Dacks are a different story altogether.

There was a little excitement in the old neighborhood yesterday as a house caught fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt and there appeared to be little damage to the house. But it provided a great opportunity for some photojournalism. All were shot with my K20D and the DA 50-135 lens.

00VeL7-215993584.jpg.10c1506efca9b3c53cc4439b746a68fb.jpg

We've had some great sunsets this past week in San Diego. I finally got out of work early enough on Friday to get a few shots. The sun dipped below the horizon before I parked the car, so no shots of the sun itself. Both with K20D and DA70. I adjusted the tint slightly in the second shot to make it look more like I saw it (well, maybe a bit more orange).

We haven't had any sun, nor snow nor much of anything else interesting, besides working 12 hour days, so I had to go back through my catalogue. I thought that these photos of a friends daughter getting ready for her quincenera would brighten up a long January.
Hope that you like them.

This photo makes me cringe at its typical-ness, but what it means to me is flash at 60 feet. I had handheld the flash at arm's length, but of course, by the angles was still too narrow to camera position to do much of anything with the shadows. I would have needed a separate flash stand to throw the shadows of the microphone stand off into nothing.

Pentax 645, 645 300mm, cc85B for a half a stop's drop on the film and modest compression. VIV 285HV with 33¢ snoot. Delta 3200 shot as 1600, developed as 400 in D-76. Print was developed in homebrew similar to Dektol.

Watkins was a civil rights worker in Mississippi who worked on voter registration in the 1960s.

Last photo is of some people touring a greenhouse on a local farm. The convention agenda involved getting people out of the convention hall, and visiting local farms instead of just staying indoors. This photo is of some people touring one of a set of three greenhouses. In this particular one, the greenhouse plants are grown directly in the ground.

Pentax 645 again.

00VeOk-216025584.jpg.3aff41f325f9e467f36e96c88b0ce207.jpg

That's a great bird shot, Dave! I can imagine how happy you are. Screw the blown snow, it's not your fault it's so white :-)

Sad to admit, but I only just found out this is what a female cardinal looks like (only the males are all-red). I know way too little about birds!

OK, so your abstract snow-on-web photo is nice too, but I really like the lady cardinal :-)

It's fun to see the global contrasts in this tread. Frank, I love those colors and content, just perfect for the DA 70mm.
We've had it wet, sunny, grey, but not cold. Flowers are coming up already.

Helibore the first

Popped in our yard a few days ago

K20D, Voigtlander 125mm, f 11@ 1/180, ISO 800 + Sigma Ring Flash

This is a blended exposure of a dense wood. The day was sunny and I wanted to capture the light coming in from west, while not obscuring the rest of the forest.

Misty Isle Woods
Pentax K20D, DA 35mm, f 6.7, ISO 800, blend of 5 exposures

Lost Lake Trail

This is from a local hike with other photographers I took last weekend. Our typical ravine for January. This rendition is especially for Jeremy. It's all about smooth transitions in tone.

I mostly spent the week in side photographing flowers. The shot was taken with 2 studio lights and the k7 and the Da* 16-50. Both are the same photo one is in black and white and the other is in color.
