stan_schurman1
Has anyone tried one of the 3rd party battery grips designed for the D5000? If so, what is your opinion? I wonder if using one would void the warranty.
kevin_delson
I can't speak directly about the grip below for the 5000, but I bought two of these for my D-300 and D-700.
They work great and seem to be built every bit as good as the more expensive Nikon version at more than 3X the cost.

Void warranty?..I don't know how unless you send the grip in with your camera if it goes for repair.

http://www.amazon.com/Zeikos-ZE-NBG5000-Battery-Nikon-D5000/dp/B002USUDDO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263829524&sr=8-1
eric_arnold
doubt it would void the warranty, but unless i am mistaken, the LCD in the D5000 flips out from the bottom, which could make using a grip impractical if you also want the LCD to rotate.
stan_schurman1
The LCD is hinged at the bottom. The only problem would be if you wanted the screen to face the front of the camera. The battery grip would partially obscure it. For me at least, that would be a problem I might encounter once in 35 years. Since psaoting this question I've found quite a few assessments of these grips, especially the Zeiko which seems to be among the best of them. Now I can get one and make my D5000 look like a D3.....kidding.
hans_janssen
Probably there aren't any camera controls on a grip for a D5000 and that makes it very unuseful.
stan_schurman1
The Zeiko has a shutter release button that operates the same way as the camera shutter release. The battery pack shutter release is connected to the camera through the remote port.
