High School Baseball/Softball

While I'm posting a bit from the past seasons.. I shot baseball/softball stuff with a 70-300 F4-5.6 because that's what I had. Come spring, I'm going to get a 1.4 and put it on the Sigma 70-200 if it allows (and auto-focuses?) to get the F4 rather than the dark 5.6 in late afternoons. Shot between 1/1000 and even 1/5000 when I was trying to freeze the ball (and because sometimes the sun was TOO bright.)
1. This one was more about the umpire than the pitcher, he was going in for exploratory throat surgery the next day for problems that he assumed was caused by 20 years of "snuff" but turned out to be not as serious
I prefer baseball pictures, mostly because I hate the facemasks worn on softball batting helmets!

I'm assuming the 1.4 that you mention in your post is an extendor. If so I have bad news for you. You mention putting on the 1.4 and then bumping your shutter speed to get to f4. when you put on the 1.4 you are going to loss a least one stop. so the fastest your fstop will get is going to be the f5.6 on a f4-f5.6 lens. If an extendor will even fit on the Sigma lens that you have. I have not a clue.

That's why I asked about it.. if it would work with the 70-200 F2.8, and give me F4 at 280 though that would only be 280 mm it would be better than 5.6 at 300mm.. haven't really looked at all the details and have 4 months to really think about it and find out. I just get tired of all the fences behind the catcher and batters being so visible.

I'm really not looking at getting any other lenses (besides the 'Bigma' aka Sigma 50-500 for some well lit outdoor stuff) and besides the Sigma 70-200 I still have the 70-300 USM that I took the above with. When the light gets worse the 70-300 is too dark but 70-200 might be a little too short at some of the baseball fields. I'll probably end up just using the 70-200 F2.8 and change position a lot during baseball games instead of getting an extender.

I have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and a Sigma 2x teleconverter. I assume their 1.4x would work better than the 2x and give you f/4 with autofocus. I don't use my 2x often, but when I need something long it does OK. If you've already got the 70-200, I say give the teleconverter a try - it's pretty cheap. If you're looking for a completely new solution, you'll get better results buying a longer lens, if you can swallow the price.

I tried a Kenko teleconverter with my Sigma 70-200 and had problems. So, bought the Sigma brand 2X and all is well. Pretty much need a monopod when using it though, unless you happen to be really steady. Bought a used 300 f4 last year from KEH. What a difference a prime makes. Wish I could afford a 300 2.8!! Still, the F4 is limiting at end of the day outdoor games.

and even better if it allows to keep autofocus and F4 with the 1.4 extender.

It won't allow you to keep the f4 with the 1.4 teleconverter on your 70-300 F4-5.6. With the 1.4 tele your will loose one stop so your f4-f5.6 now becomes an f5.6-f8.

On a 2x teleconverter you loose 2 stops and your lens is now an f8-f11 70-300mm.

Look at the specs on the teleconverters and you will see. They tell you in the specs how many stops you will loose with their teleconverter.
