milsu
Hi. I was considering to buy a D40 with a 35mm lens. Does anyone have experience with all Nikon 35mm lenses, f1.4, f2, and f1.8, to compare them? What are their characteristics regarding distortion, sharpness, and contrast?
Matt Laur
Only the new 35/1.8 G or Sigma's 30/1.4 will autofocus on that body. The small viewfinder makes manual focus very challenging, so that's something to consider.

I presume you've already ruled out an f/2.8 zoom that happens to cover that same focal length?
douglas lee
The new 35 1.8G is pretty sweet for under $200. I tried it on my D700 while in the camera store.
photo5
I just bought the Nikon 35mm f1.8 AF-S DX lens and I am very pleased with it. Performance at f1.8 is much better than my 35mm f2 AI manual focus lens is at f2.
tommyinca
IMHO, on a DX, with the exception of Longitudinal and Latitudinal CA the 35/1.8 is a bit better then the 35/2. If f2 performance is not super critical, I would choose the 35/2 still and save the need to clean up CA. But on a D40, 35/1.8 is the way to go. It is the only one that offer AF.

35/1.4 is much more expensive then both of these lens and has no CPU. It is not an Apple to Apple comparison.

ray_rg
one more vote for Nikon 35mm f/1.8G... I was using it on D40 and it's wonderful "little gem".
