What is the difference between pornographic and artistic intention?

Recommended Posts

Quite often (many might say,far too often)...when it comes to photographing the nude female form... if the model, whose legs are spread as wide as a Montana sky is the type you'd see in a Victoria Secrets ad, it's art. If the model striking the same pose looks like a crack-whore... it's definitely pornography. We all know that...right? ;)

I think in photography, pornography is where you violate the subject in the photo. Taking the photo to humiliate them, or against their will.

According to this, any photos showing nudity or sexual acts of any level of vulgarity or obsenity is not porography as long as the people shown agreed to be photographed and the photographer did not intend to shoot the image for the purpose of bringing disgrace to the people shown. That would mean that the vast majority of imagery produced by the porn industry is not porn.

the purpose of pornography is to incite lust

Is that a bad thing? Is it worse than trying to "incite" any other emotions or feelings?

And given that the purpose of most advertising is to "incite lust," is all advertising now pornography and subject to the laws that pertain to photography?

Helmut Newton's work. he shows no respect to his subjects.

My take was always that Newton adored his subjects, photographically. His work is very complex in its commentary on advertising and modern society. Feminism has the problem that it sometimes fails to separate symbols and intent from reality.

Dave I'm a little concerned about your reference to Mablethorpe as a one horse town. I happen to have it on the very best authority that the burghers of Mablethorpe, in addition to being avid photo.net readers, are also a bunch of sadistic homicidal psychopaths who simply detest anything bad being said about their town. So you had better watch out.

Crack-who.. what? Art?

If you are to adorn printed article page with a floral motive - it's o'kay but as soon as you start to think of adding some human figure element to it, you STOP right there, turn around and go pray for forgivness repenting whole thing SINCERELLY.

Well, I laughed the loudest at Kelly Fannigan's question:
"do you hide it under the coffee table if a neighbor or relative arrives ?"

Now I want to really quiz you: If that neighbour or relative burst in, giving you just enough time to do one of two things, hide the porn or get dressed. What would you do?
John Liberty "about 50 bucks" Ha! ( ... another laugh )

The eyes and imagination of the viewer.

Absolutely, what incites lust in one person, can be just an object/body part to another.

According to this, if the model is willingly showing all her 'wares', for the purpose of titilating the viewer into sexual fantasies, this is art not porn?

Hi John,

I go to Mablethorpe many times a year, I love the place, although when I tell people where I am going for the weekend, it usually has the effect of them screwing up their face and saying "Mablethorpe, why on earth would anyone want to go there?" but I love it.

Although it can be quite disconcerting when meeting the locals and they hold up their hand and say "gimme six!" but other than that, it's great.

Dave
