Lindahl Vignette ND filter..

Looking into getting a Graduated ND filter for a 52mm 35 mm camera. Been reading past posts and getting educated, but came across a used Lindahl, 4.5 x 4.5 Vignette glass neutral density filter that has a narrow band of 'darkness' near one end, (does not start in the center) and is inexpensive. It would seem that this would have very limited use. Perhaps a sunset shot that has very little sky in it.
Would someone give me some explanation of it's use.
