Practical Experience

I was thinking about trying work at a picture place like Sear, The Picture People, or some place along those lines to get some practical experience as well as have access to the sitting room area/studio.
What do you think and has any one ever gone this route?
With the holiday season coming around, I figured it would be a good way to earn a couple of dollars, gather a lot of practical experience, figure out what I really needed as far as a studio and equipment is concern, just to name a few.....

When I shot for Lifetouch, each photog had a floor plan and each light went EXACTLY where they wanted it and you shot the poses they prescribed. It was not an opportunity for creativity. This was particularly shooting kindergarten through 11th grade. Shooting 12th grade HS seniors allowed much more individuality as long as the exposure was accurate and the stuff sold.
