ncarnick
At the end of this month I hope to take some shots at Kilauea. I was wondering if there are any suggestions on films and filters. I'm leaning towards using the B+W enhancing filter to bring out some of the reds but I'm a bit lost on film choice. I'd like to pick a fine grained film with saturated reds. This has me leaning towards Velvia but nightshooting with that film could be very problematic. It seems that Provia 100F, Agfachrome Professional 100 or Ektachrome Elite 200 might be better choices in terms of Reciprocity Law Failure. Any suggestions are appreciated. les_campbell
I'd go with Provia 100F and 400F. But my first suggestion would be to type "lava" in the little search box on the upper right on photo.net.
ncarnick
Thanks Les, I did a search for "lava" before I posted and found a very good discussion titled "Night photos of Volcano." However that thread dated to 1997 and the general theme seemed to be "any film will work if you properly correct for long exposures." I figured some films may have come out since then (unlikely) and that someone out there may have tried multiple films for this task and come up with a preference. hearst
Phone 808-985-6000 for a daily update of the lava flows and getting to a viewpoint.
robert_kennedy
You may wantto invest in some HIE and an #87(?) filter. Lava and IR should be VERY cool. (Yes, I KNOW HIE doesn't see heat, but lava should produce a TON of IR light if it is hot enough to glow red).
