Windsor International Photographic Seminar Nov. 13, 14 and 15, 2009, St. Clair Centre for the Arts, 201 Riverside Dr. W., Windsor, Ontario

The third annual Windsor International Photographic Seminar (WIPS) will be held Nov. 13, 14 and 15 at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts, 201 Riverside Dr. W., on Windsor’s scenic downtown riverfront.

The seminar is aimed at professional, amateur and beginner photographers as well as the general public to:

Learn, discover and share along with top photographers in North America.

Showcase the City of Windsor and the photographic opportunities on our spectacular riverfront.

Featured speakers are:

Ralph Gibson - A retrospective (Friday 6 to 9 p.m.)

The New York-based photographer will show a retrospective of his work. His career spans more than 50 years and his fine-art photography has been featured in solo exhibits in more than 230 galleries worldwide. Many of his photographs will be on exhibit at the Art Gallery of Windsor from Oct. 4 to Nov. 24.

Windsor is among The Stone, New York City and La Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris for presentations in 2009.

As well he has exhibits in 2009 at Arca Arte, Vercelli, Italia, Photo 4, Paris, Fahey / Klein Gallery, Hollywood.

Gibson’s photos are formal studies of light and shadow centered on one geometric element or single human gesture. Far from his documentary roots, he has compared his photographs to objects, at once rooted in reality and cut loose from it by the abstracting influence of light and shadow; his interest not in the camera’s ability to capture life, but to create a life of its own. His photographs present seductive visual metaphors and narratives about personal perspective.

Rob Provencher and James Hodgins (Saturday 9 a.m to 12:30 p.m.)

'No BS photo success' Rob and James are professional photographers with studios in Sudbury, Ontario.

They are teaming up to provide a fast-paced, insightful workshop that will provide you with more ideas, tips and strategies than you can fit in a camera bag.

Darwin Wiggett (Saturday 2 to 5:30 p.m.)

Darwin was last year's Travel Photographer of the year. A renowned instructor, author and photographer, he'll explore natural moments photography.

James Hodgins will highlight simple but successful techniques to enhance the use of off-camera flash.

Award-winning photographer Nick Brancaccio of The Windsor Star will discuss the thrills and challenges facing today's photojournalist.
