triston
Hi Just saw that Nikon has released a D version for the F1.8 50mm AF lens. I'm a beginner to photography and i've read all about the 50MM F1.8 lens. And i'm really tempted to get one for myself. What is the difference between a D version and a non-D version of Nikon lenses? I'm using an entry-level Nikon F65. Is the D version really going to impact in any signifcant way? thanks.
adam_maas
The D lens is optically identical to the non-D version, it adds support for the 3D Matrix Metering your F65 is capable of, as well as 3D Matrix Flash(Which is the big win). If you shoot flash, go with the D, if you don't use much flash, go with the D if it's not too much more. Personally I'm going to be picking up the 50f1.8D soon, I was waiting for it to be released before picking up the 50mm prime for my F65.
humanist
Adam, are you sure the F65 has 3D Matrix Flash? I find it quite conspicuous that at www.nikonusa.com, the "3D Multisensor Balanced Fill Flash" is featured prominently in the specs for the F80, but not for the F65. Instead, the latter is said to have "Matrix Balanced Fill Flash" only (no mention of 3D), i.e. flash output is guided by the six segments of the metering system without taking distance information into account. I may be wrong about this, but you should check it out if the 3D flash metering is a factor in your choice of lens.
There is no doubt, however, that the exposure system on the F65 is "3D Matrix" and will be able to benefit from the "D" feature on the new 50/1.8D lens (for whatever that is worth).
Regards, //Kenneth
ilkka_nissila
The D version has a much improved manual focus feel in my opinion.
cuadriello
The D is less than $10 more expensive, get the D just in case!
