scott_g2
Has anyone had any experience using the 28-70L and an EF 2x (or 1.4x) converter together? According to the Canon propaganda this should work, but does the image quality suffer? I am looking for a very sharp zoom, with a bit more reach. I will be traveling and I will not have room for an additional tele lens. I am not sure I would be happy with the 28-135 IS in the long run...but who knows. I do like the additional "punch" the L lenses seem to give. (The rumored 24-105 L would be ideal but who knows when or if that will materialize.) Many thanks. yakim_peled1
If you look at Canon's official site, http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/lineup/standard/index.html (click on 28-70/2.8 L and then on accessories) you can see that there is no mention on TC compatibility so the answer to your question is No. Will you have enough room for an 135/2.8 SF ? It is quite compact for a tele lens.
PuppyDigs
The EF 28-135 IS USM is about the same size as the EF 28-70 2.8L USM but much lighter. If you're ultra picky about quality, you might consider supplementing your zoom with a light prime like the EF 135 2.8 SF or EF 200 2.8L USM II. Heck, the 2x Extender weights about the same as the EF 135 2.8 SF. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
cliff_lesergent
The Canon EF 1.4x and 2x extenders will NOT fit the EF 28-70mm f2.8L lens.
eos 10 fan
"The rumored 24-105 L would be ideal but who knows when or if that will materialize." Photokina starts on September 25, 2002; the big announcements from the OEMs will probably start coming out a few weeks before then. --
bob stewart jacksonville
Scott, I'm assuming from your comments that if you don't have room for a second zoom lens, that you also are going to be travelling without a tripod. Under those circumstances the 28-135 would be an excellent choice. I'd be willing to bet it will outperform the 28-70L with a 2x (either third party, or a Canon with an extension tube) particularly handheld.
