mvw photo
When I shoot people, I emphasise that I own the copyright, but the clients gets an unlimited use license. There is either a contract or there is an exchange of emails where this is made explicit (and which is kept).
So I wonder, since I suppose many of you do the same: do you then ever use the images, either on your web site or in books or in a studio window display etc; and if so, do you ask or tell the client in advance?
Michael

pete_harlan1
Your question is best answered with..It Depends.

I have clients that have no problem with me using the images for self promotional purposes only; not for sale.
In other words, I can promote myself with images I shot, but I can not SELL the images for a profit.

This should be clearly spelled out in your contracts. If you intend the (USE) (legal term) to be for Publisizing, Publishing, or Advertisement, it needs to be clearly understood by the client.

NOT asking or telling them you intend to display the work you just did is not only unprofessional, but will harm your reputation.

katrin_d.
I don't shoot without a signed contract, full payment and a model release. I use images from most shoots on my website so I'd never go with just an exchange of emails (i.e. no client signature) as a "paper trail".
