george_gan1
How compatable is the Canon 50D with a Canon EF 16-35 2.6 lens?
I want this lens to use at family events as well as landscapes.
JDMvW
I presume you mean f/2.8? In any case all EF lenses will fit on ALL EOS bodies.
Lenses labeled EF-S only work on the so-called "crop" or APS-C bodies; but since the 50D is one of these, every EOS lens made will pretty much fit on it.
ppb
George,
As stated by JDM all EOS lens will work on the 50D. However if your looking to get the 16 - 35 mm focal length then you should look at the EF-S 10 - 22 f/3.5-4.5. Canon made this lens for the "crop" or APS-C bodies only. It is Equivalent to the 16 - 35 L on a full frame body such as the 5D's. I have both and can tell you that both are very good. The 16 - 35 is a bit faster / with a bit more depth of field.
mbkissel
If you are looking for a 16-35L f/2.8, make sure it's the II version. It is an excellent lens for landscapes. As mentioned, the 10-22 is much wider on a crop body. You might find it better suited for what you have in mind on the 50D.
PuppyDigs
16mm yields coverage about equal to a 26mm lens on FF, ideal for sweeping landscapes and group photos. And if you someday go FF you'll have a wide zoom. However 35mm is a bit short on the long end for a walkaround zoom. You may find the 17-40 4L USM a better choice if you don't need F2.8.

Of course for less money than the 16-25 II you can get the impressive EF-s 17-55 2.8 IS USM. It's the friggen bee's knees on crop and every bit of the optical quality of the L series but with a lighter build. I rarely remove the 17-55 from my 50D.

http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/frary/canon_efs17-55.htm

http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/frary/canon_ef17-40usm.htm
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me.
