Where are all of the used Pentax DSLR's??

I'm in the market for a used Pentax DSLR, seems like reputable resellers such as Keh.com, adorama.com, etc., have extremely low used Pentax DSLRs for sale! There seem to be plenty of Olympus DSLRs, but no Pentax, unless I'm looking for a ist*ds. Where can I find a good used Pentax DSLR?

Jet I understand, Not long after the k20d shipped you could find used k10d's for $300 to $350, but there is not many of them out there. I've been wanting a backup body with the same control layout for my k20 for a while, but reasonalbly priced Pentax DSLR's from a reputable sources seemed to have dried up in recent months. Not sure if they are not buying them or if people are just hanging on to them. But would be willing to bet a few months ofter the k7 or what ever it's called ships we'll see some k10 and k20 on the used market.

I don't know where these cameras go, but perhaps people just hold onto them as backups. Electronics eventually develop issues and having one or 2 paid off bodies isn't a bad idea. Much cheaper than having to overnight a second body if yours fails at an inopportune moment.

I don't think a lot of people who had K10Ds upgraded to K20Ds. By a lot I mean the majority of users, not all the users, and I'd guess that most of those people kept the K10D as a backup since ergonomically it was identical, and functionally it was nearly the same as well.

You see a lot of DL/DS because they were affordable and sold for a while.

Smart people like the recently disappeared Jeff Crister picked up gently used K10D with a grip for if I remember correctly under $400, considering the grip sells for $100 used, this is an incredible deal.

I'm one of those people with a K10D that didn't upgrade to the K20D. I've used a K100D Super as backup whenever I've had a serious gig. And when I say "used", I mean "the K100D Super stayed in the camera bag because the K10D never failed on me".

When the K7 (K-7, K7D, K-7D, or whatever) comes out, I'll probably wait for the price to go down a bit and grab one. Then the K10D will become my backup.

All this to explain why there aren't so many K10D's out there in the used market. The DSLR technology curve is tapering off, so I expect the K10D to remain current for a few years to come and people who are money concsious (and Pentax users tend to be that in spades) will hang on to their K10/20D's and K200D's for a while.

I ran a poll on my blog asking people how often they replace their cameras, and 38% responded that they had never replaced it, while 29% said they waited at least 3 camera models until they upgraded. This tells us (if we can infer anything from 208 respondents) that most people aren't upgrading until their camera is well and truly worn out, either physically or technologically.

I think part of it is that the value drops so rapidly. If you are looking to upgrade, and discover that your 1 or 2 year old camera is now only worth about 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost of the new one, there's little incentive to sell. It does have more value as a backup.

Mis,

Are you still photographing or just blogging about photography ;-)

But yeah, the curve has tapered a lot. High ISO seems to be the only area of real improvement. Now that APS-C has reached critical mass at around 15MP they don't have a lot to entice us with. dynamic range was never a big selling point for me since slide film has about identical DR to digital (if not slightly less). Filtration and multiple exposures solve this for FREE! Keeping in mind with use of filtration even a low DR slide film can get well over 10 stops of effective range. Digital is no different when filtration is used.

My only real request from the cameras personally (IQ wise) would be a squeaky clean ISO 1600, and a usuable 3200. But only about 15% of my photography needs this. The from what I've seen first hand the competitors to Pentax really aren't offering that much more in terms of high ISO (exceptions being notably the D3/D700 at 4-6X the price of Pentax DSLRs). The K20D is very acceptable in good light at ISO 2500, and it did improve shadow noise over the K10D (which is actually quite good at 1600) at 1600.

....15GB of unprocessed RAW files waiting for me.... sounds like me, if I shot RAW!

Gosh, the new prices have dropped so low now! Somewhat more than $650 for a K20D, and 3 year Pentax warranty available from Pentax USA through July! Or a very nice compact K200D can be had for hardly more than $500 or no more than$600 with the kit lens.

But yes, I believe you'll see some used models appearing a few months after the new K7 becomes available this summer. Especially the K10D.

The price of new K20D stock that is left will also drop even more.

I do take a photo every now and again... I currently have about 15GB of unprocessed RAW files waiting for me. Remind you of anyone, Justin? ;-)

It only reminds me of the best photographer I deal with on a daily basis...yeah, I know how it is. I was so back logged last year it was pathetic, which is funny because I arguably shot more, blogged more consistently/frequently and uploaded photos faster the year before. With all the commercial shooting mixed in last year, I think I was burned out a bit. Finally caught up though (almost, still have quite a few panoramics to stitch, and some stuff from Pittsburgh). Now time to start the process over, I'm HOPING North Carolina in a few weeks alone will backlog me for the summer with both film and digital.

Backlogs aren't a bad thing if there are good images in there!!!

Local Wolf Camera being liquidated, and they have a NEW K100D with kit lens for $337? Is that a decent deal? Will upgrade body in future when more funds come in, since I just had to sell my equipment to pay bills, etc. Would like to eventually have a K20D.
thanks

I'm gonna be selling my K10D when the K-7 comes out, assuming Pentax hasn't gone totally off the rails with some surprising new misfeature. I'd like to get as much as possible, of course, but I'm totally willing to offer a good, fair deal to a fellow Pentaxian.

And Jet, $337 sounds like a pretty decent price for the K10 D to me, but a bit steep for the K100D at this point.
