pete_s.
I just got a 50mm f/1.8 AI-S (serial 4069xxx) and it hasn't got a meter coupling prong. Not even holes for it.
I though more or less all manual focus Nikkors had that. Any idea why?
christoph_sensen
The last versions of the 50 mm f/1.8 Ai-S were styled after the Series E lenses, which also don't have the meter coupling prong. Probably to make them as compact as possible.
Christoph
john_lynch5
This is the compact 1.8 lens that was introduced at the same time as the N2000 body (1985). This lens replaced the AI-S 1.8 that was the same construction as the AI 1.8. This lens is similar in appearance to the "E" series 1.8 and does not have the coupling prong. There are two versions of this lens; the first focuses to 2 ft., the second focuses to 1.5 ft.
User_276104
The Mir site has some information and photos of this version of the lens, in case anyone was wondering what it looks like (like me) - it's down in the lower part of the page:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/50mmnikkor/index6.htm

photo5
It is supposed to be the best optically of all the manual focusing 50mm f1.8 lenses. I had one new when I got my FE2 as a high school graduation gift in 1987 (the FE2 was $299.99 for the body and $349.99 with the 50mm f1.8 AIS). I prefer the older AIS version with a little more shading for the front element, also a larger focus ring.

I have a few other 50mm lenses, like the 50/1.8 AF-D but only this manual focus f/1.8.
In general I prefer AI lenses for their longer focus throw.

Thanks for all your replies.
