aim rollphoto805
Hey, i purchased a rebel x, and as you know, it does not come with a flash. I dont know too much about TTL and all the other things that have to do with the flash. I just want an inexpensive flash that i could you for Flash Fill when im taking pictures in shady areas. Does anyone have any suggestions on what flash i should get? thanks
k_t1
The Canon 220EX, its a nice small flash unit that pretty much does everything you need. Actually it looks small but is powerful than most built in camera flashes.
NK Guy
The 220EX isn't your best bet unless you plan on upgrading your camera in the future. It supports features your camera doesn't support - E-TTL and FP flash, mainly. The 200E is the cheapest option if you just want a small flash for point and shoot stuff. The discontinued 160E is smaller and cheaper but it uses lithium batteries and not AA batteries, so it costs more to operate. For more control, the fairly large discontinued 430EZ is available used and it gives flash exposure compensation control over the flash output. yakim_peled1
Add the Off Shoe Camera Cord II. It will both give you more interesting pictures and help you to avoid red-eye.
basscheffers
I have never gotten any red eye with a flash, other than on compact cameras. But going off camera is definitely a good thing. Unless your stated use is going to be the only thing you use it for, both the 160e and 220ex are fine, but I would buy nothing less than a flash that can swivel and tilt, like the 420EX. This way, when you use it indoors, you can bounce it off walls and ceilings, giving a nice diffused, light coming from a more natural angle. No more "deer caught in headlights" effect! NK Guy
>I have never gotten any red eye with a flash, other than on compact cameras. I have. With a large shoemount flash unit (430EZ) shooting with a long telephoto lens in a school gymnasium. The kids looked like a little choir of Satans. At the distance I was shooting (with a 300mm lens) the distance between flash and camera body wasn't enough to give a decent separation angle. eosdoc
Another option would be to return the REBEL X, and replace it with another model that had a built-in flash. For instance, the REBEL XS camera offers a built-in flash.
