Samir -

My guess is that you are using an older (pre 2007) computer with the windows xp or other windows based os on it.

The older computers don't recognize the SDHC format cards. Best solution that I have found is an external memory card reader. The newer ones recognize the SDHC format and handle the translation for the computer.

I have the same issue and everytime I have to remind myself of that, grab the card reader and plug it in.

Samir,

David's advice is probably the best idea...there is only one thing that sticks with me.

Until recently, I owned a pre-2007 notebook running Windows XP, and I had the same problem, only mine worked perfectly fine when I used the USB cord straight from the camera. This worked both with my Nikon D40x, and my aunt's Canon Rebel XT.

Let us know if the external reader worked.

First of all, a 2G SD card is not SDHC.
Samir, exactly which Nikon camera are you using? I personally don't have any that uses SD cards, but on some DSLRs, there is an USB choice between PTP and Mass Storage. In that case you need to set it to Mass Storage.

"First of all, a 2G SD card is not SDHC."

I'm just curious, Shun, by whose definition? The camera, the card manufacturer, or the computer? I purchased my Nikon D40x with a Sandisk 2GB Extreme III SD and had the very problem Samir is describing, aside from the difference when using USB. When I called HP for laptop help, they told me it is because 2GB is too high a capacity for the internal card reader in the computer. Sure enough, a 1GB card worked perfectly fine.

FWIW, the laptop that experienced this problem was manufactured January, 2006. I have since upgraded and no longer have the problem.

Ryan, you can check out Wikipedia on the SDHC standard, which is for 4G to 32G SD cards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card
Anything below 4G is standard SD, not SDHC, and anything above 32G is SDXC. If you don't like Wikipedia, you can find the information elsewhere such as SD's official web site: http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdhc/
If your HP laptop has problem with 2G SD cards, it is due to other reasons.

samir,
it's the computer. older desktops and and laptops will not read SDCH (sometimes even just 2gb). just use a card reader and you will be fine. i just bought a d40 with a sdhc. my 4-yr old desktop with integrated card readers doesn't read it but my 1-yr old laptop does. i hope the problem is that simple....have fun.
