different recycle time on SB-800

<p>I almost always shoot in manual mode with the flash set to TTL. I get great recycle time with it, but on Christmas morning, I set the camera to P mode and the recycle time was MUCH slower. Why is this? Does the flash have different output?<br>

<p>I'd guess the P mode is picking a much smaller aperture for you than you normally choose in M mode. This means the TTL flash has to fire to a lot higher power lever to give you enough light for the smaller aperture. Having fired more power, it takes longer to recycle.</p>

<p>Yup, what Joseph says. Check the EXIF data in the shots you did in P mode, and you'll see exactly how the camera decided ot handle the exposure.</p>
