Olympus 35RC

Recommended Posts

Owning three of these little beauties( total cash outlay of $37) and always have one with me I was very happy to read a review today by Ken Rockwell. It seems Ken just recently DISCOVERED the RC35 and is completely in love with it. I know I sure do love mine and never disappointed with the results. I enjoy showing photos I have taken with the camera and when asked what I used I proudly show my Oly 35RC. Usually the reaction upon seeing the Oly is WOW and then a double WOW when I tell them I paid $12 for it. Anyway, I have included the link to Ken Rockwell´s review:

It's great the Ken Rockwell loves this camera, the downside is, since a lot of people read his reviews, I am expecting the 35 RC to surpass the ridiculous prices the Minolta Hi-Matic 7S II has reached.

The good thing is I already own one, so I am not worried unless this one breaks beyond repair.

It is an exceptional camera. Should you need to re-seal it, this can be a bit tricky because of the odd-shaped foam piece on the film door, however I've written instructions for it (including the odd-shaped foam piece) which you can see here: http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/sealreplacement.html And if you need a battery adapter to turn the #675 hearing aid (zinc-air) battery into a perfect clone of the old PX-13 / PX-625, please send me an e:mail. I'll point you to my E-Bay auctions.

Jon

"Photography's Holy Grail". I love it.

Good thing my old camera fanaticism is for Minolta SLRs - prices have actually been trending up but they're still very reasonable. What I should do is get a bunch of some camera that's really cheap, take the one in best condition and give it to Ken, wait for him to write it up then sell them!

Surprised he's just discovered it, these have hardly been in hiding for the past 35 years. This was the first 35mm camera I owned, a Christmas present in 1974. It's a great performer, but I had been hoping for an SLR and I was disappointed in its limited shutter speed range and 1-meter minimum focus distance right from the start... I probably never really gave it a fair chance. As a user, I'm afraid I prefer the Canonet with its faster lens and wider range shutter, although I'm sure the 35RC will take a sharper picture.

I'm also a little curious that Ken thinks it's 'crazy' to spend 80 cents on a zinc air battery but sane to spend $4.50 for the same battery with a Wein label. Oh well, to each his own.

Today, use the Wein PX625 zinc-air replacement. At $4.50, it's the same price as mercury batteries were, adjusted for inflation, in their day. Crazier people use 675 zinc-air hearing aid batteries and pop a washer in the battery cover to help it fit.

I noticed that. I don't think he knows that a Wein cell is a zinc-air cell with a washer on it, or that both of them have a life span of months not years, even with the camera turned off.

Unfortunately the Olympus 35RC prices have skyrocketed since the Rockwell review. Last one I checked went for $366 on epay.

This is all very sad. I have one and I think its a really wonderful little camera but it makes me angry that some poor chap pays nearly $400 for it when its really worth maybe a tenth of that amount.
