D300 shutter speed BULB and metering

Is there any way to have the D300 meter exposures beyond 30 seconds long?

Not likely, as the camera's computer cannot guess how long you plan on keeping the shutter open. [You could try a f32 exposure in 'A' for a night scene and see if the shutter speed will exceed 30 seconds.]

I don't think so, but if you're uncertain how to establish the exposure for the scene, take a shot metered to set a base line and then increase by factors of 2 (i.e., multiples of f-stops) based on what you see in the resulting image.

 

There should also be some guides online that a search would reveal giving sample exposure guidelines for night photography.

My 300 has a bulb setting at the lower end as well as an x sync setting

<p>Gerald, I guess I contradicted myself between the title and the question. I realize BULB relies on me closing the shutter manually - hence no auto exposure.<br>

Chris - I think you answered my question: no auto  exposure past 30 sec.<br>
