This ought to get you started.

 

Learn to make layer masks, edit them, move them from one layer to another, delete them, turn them off and on.

 

The first hint is to select an area you wish to adjust. Then hit command or (ctrl windows) + J to move the selection only to a new layer of its own. Areas around the selection will be transparent and represented by a checker board pattern.

 

You can make new layers duplicating the layer below, command+ J, then do the adjustment. Or simply go to the bottom of the layers pallet and open the icon for adjustment layer. Pick what you want from the provided list.

 

The book "Photoshop for Dummies" is a decent start. $20 at Amazon. Martin Evening has a good book and there are others by Scott Kilby .
