dandem
A good protective filter can cost around $125.00. Make you own conclusion - replace a scratched protective filter, or go out and buy a new lense for hundreds of $'s because you never had a protective filter protecting your lens. naturegirl99
All I can say is that I thank my lucky stars I invested $100 for a UV filter for my Nikon 70-300 VR zoom, especially since somewhere out in the field, there was an impact with the lens still inside the bag...Let's just say I didn't discover it right away, at least not until I picked up the lens and heard a horrible tinkling sound behind the lens cap. I was dying inside as I pried off the cap...and discovered that, while the filter was smashed, the lens glass was not only untouched but also unscratched! Whewwww....I know where I stand on this discussion.
farmer on the hill
If the image has to be at it's sharpest, I take the filter off. For everything else I leave it on.
