saulzelan
can anyone recommend a good camera equipment store in paris? specifically, i need to replace the panning head of my slik 444 sport II tripod, which must have gotten smashed in my bag and is now frozen, the legs are fine, however and if i could replace the head it would work fine. also, has anyone had any recent experiences traveling with film from paris CDG, will they allow hand inspection of film and is ASA 160 safe for the scanners used for carry on luggage? thanks for your help!! light-zone
ASA 160 should not be a problem with the x-ray machines used for carry on luggage. I recently went through Ohare in Chicago, right after the new checked bagge X-ray machines were installed. They really blast the luggage with X-rays. I had forgotten about a few rolles of 400 ASA film and before I could stop them, the luggage was alreay bombarded. The development turned out fine....I think film is more resilient than we were lead to believe, or wanted to believe. As far as paris is concerned, sorry, I live in Germany. But with the Euro, youmight want to check out www.brenner-versand.de.
john lehman, college alask
There is a very large general photo store (plus good prices on film) one or two floors down in the shopping center at Les Halles in Beaubourg just north of Rue de Rivoli -- connected to the bookstore (FNRC I believe). There are also alot of professional camera stores along Ave Beaumarchais north of Place de la Bastile in the 11th Arr. Don't bother trying to get hand checks of film at CDG (based on experience 3 weeks ago). 160 speed is safe -- I have taken 400 thru even weeks of Russian Xrays with no problems.
