squareframe
first failure for me .. my EF50mm f1.4 will focus manually, but will only AF in one direction. focus onsomething, and then attempt to focus on a subject that is closer and it works as expected. attempt to go theother way and focus on an object farther away and it ... won't focus. indicator lights as if it wants to AF ..but the lens mechanism isn't driven. I suspect this is a common failure -mode. anyone guess at what the repair costs might be? obviously there is apoint of no return, where I would be more inclined to purchase a new and different lens. Tustin is the closestfacility I believe. thank you ... daniel taylor
kenny_c
I've had a 50mm 1.4 fail (left out in the rain for about 10min I believe) that costed about $280 for a AF motor replacement. Most likely it is the AF mechanism. good luck.
squareframe
thanks Kenny. my reality is that it could be anything (I am at their mercy), and even if it were a 5-second twist of a screw, if it amounts to $280, then in my opinion that is a poor option considering this is a $349 lens. I paid much less than that a decade ago .. and am inclined to write it off. drat! $49 .. ok. $99 .. maybe. otherwise, I'll junk it and put those monies on a better lens. daniel taylor
g dan mitchell
Why don't you contact Canon and ask them?
alex_medeiros
This is a known problem with this lens. I had the same failure with mine a little over a year after purchasing it. It is a clutch drive failure and the repair through the Canon service center was about $100. It was repaired about five years ago and has been working fine since. Best wishes. squareframe
thank you for taking the time to respond. I thought it might be a common problem. if I can get it back from Canon for only $100 it is worth it. dt
