Canon DPP for Lens Correction then ACR?

For the Canon 18-55 IS kit lens, DPP works GREAT for lens correction (distortion, CA, vignetting and color blur).

Unfortunately, I much prefer ACR for all other editing functions. Most of my other lenses are either non-Canon

or very high quality Canon so I don't bother with DPP and go straight to ACR.

 

When I use the 18-55 (like I did yesterday for my kid's field trip), I (1) do lens correction in DPP on raw CR2

files, (2) save them as TIFF, (3) edit the TIFF in ACR, (4) save as JPEG, then (5) delete the TIFF (I don't

want/need the large TIFF files). I don't like this because I lose the xmp file (for preserving the ACR edit

selections). Any suggestions for a better workflow?

I would save the original RAW files if you do no do so. Saving as a JPEG but deleting the RAW file is sort of like making a custom print but throwing out the negative.

I do keep the RAW file, but erase the TIFF. But then the meta file is lost. I wish I could correct the lens in DPP and go straight to ACR without the intermediate TIFF save. I know I can go direct to photoshop from DPP but not to ACR as far as I know.

I don't think it's possible to do what you want. I think I would be tempted to ditch the CR2 in favor of keeping the TIFF for this.

Or, you could try DxO Optics Pro, which does even better than DPP at lens corrections (esp. fringing). DxO is completely non-destructive, and can communicate with Lightroom pretty well. I don't usually mess with ACR myself.
