bob_marz
What to do on your 50th birthday? I suppose most people might opt for a cruise or a beach in Honolulu. My wife opted for climbing Mt Marcy. Tallest peak in New York State. 5,344 feet. Approximately 15 miles round trip. Like Justin, I guess I am one lucky guy. Not only do I get to fish a lot, I get to spend a lot of quality time int the Adirondacks of New York. First, the trail from The Adirondack Lodge.<div></div>

bob_marz
This shot was nice. It seemed to work best in b & w.<div></div>
bob_marz
After hiking 5 to 6 miles, this was the view of the summit still to go.<div></div>
bob_marz
Yes, it's that bump way up in the far right corner. After climbing almost 5,000 feet, strangely enough, there is a nice meadow along a boardwalk before the summit assault.<div></div>
bob_marz
Which is larger, my wife, or the cairn? Perspective is everything in photography.<div></div>

bob_marz
Not only is the view awesome, but the whole atmosphere, the cairns, etc, it is just incredible.<div></div>
bob_marz
Even though many other mountains across the US and the world are much higher, you still feel like you are truly on top of the world.<div></div>
bob_marz
Again, this mountain is 5, 344 feet tall, yet people have built a cairn this tall to commemorate this peak.<div></div>
bob_marz
The long walk home was still inviting even with tired old bones.<div></div>
bob_marz
After we returned to the car, my bride of 25 years was not still satisfied, so we drove to Lke Placid and had a meal of Prime Beef called The, what else, "Marcy Cut". I'll leave you with a view from Marcy Dam, 2 miles from the ADK Parking Lot. It was a very fine day.

mountainvisions
Never done marcy in the warm weather. Nice shots! How long ago was this? Leaves still look good, and no snow, I'm assuming a few weeks ago? <P> But I have some bad news Bob, you wasted your time. I like the first shot the best. So everything after the start of the hike was for nothing ;-) <P> Only time I've been up there is winter. Not my favorite peak, much prefer the gothics or haystack, but Marcy has a special place for me in that it was essentially where Teddy Roosevelt became president, and very few presidents have become president on NY's highest point. But then very few presidents were like Roosevelt. <P> Bob, you and I are a lot alike. Never ever could figure out the appeal of sitting on the beach, or taking a cruise. <P> From my last time up in 2005 (Pentax Program Plus, Provia 100F, and 24mm KA): <P> <a title="Dave Ascending Final Summit Ridge To Marcy (c. 2005)" href=" <img src="http://static.flickr.com/2170/2292792389_a53cbcd93e_d.jpg" border="0"/> </a>
bob_marz
Thanks Garry. My hope was for people to enjoy what we experienced. I sincerely need to learn a helluva lot more about photography. I am reading and learning a lot from all of you. It will take quite awhile for me to branch off into new perspectives. I guess fish, nature, scenery, somewhat is easier for me. Gotta take that leap some time. You guys are my inspiration.
bob_marz
What, Justin, you didn't at least like the cairns? I have to say, if I was younger, I would do Algonquin and Marcy in winter, for it is a much purer experience, but I am a wee bit older and have to opt for somewhat warmer weather. The climb was just recently. We save our time off for the fall, for as you know, it can be the best hiking time of all. Because of that, I will have November (oops, October pics) to post in November. Ampersand, Noonmark, Hurricane. We did a lot this year. That shot going up Marcy in winter is special. Wish I were younger.
bob_marz
Hey, we did do Gothics last year. I know you prefer the straight up, vertical peaks versus the 15 mile round trip hauls, but Gothics ain't no picnic. It was awesome though and well worth the effort.<div></div>
bob_marz
As for Teddy Roosevelt, he was a special president who truly recognized the reason to put aside places of nature for all to enjoy for eternity. This arch called, Roosevelt Arch is the north entrance to Yellowstone Park.<div></div>
jgredline
Nice set Bob. My fav is also the first. The black and white works for as well..Gosh, I wish I had fall that leads to winter like you folks.
bob-c
Bob, very nicely done and congratulations! It looks like it was a lot of fun. I totally agree with you and Justin - autumn, winter, either one! I only wish I had had a Pentax when I was in Iceland in '72, or Newfoundland in '77, but, yes, I was younger then. As for TR, I concur. I teach the second half of U.S. history and that unit is one of my favorites. Once again - great shootin and keep on truckin!! roseberry guitars
Nice stuff Bob. You and Justin sure have a wonderful back yard to play in. I have a couple little sisters in your general vicinity (one in Minnesota and another in North Carolina) that have been bugging me to visit. I've been thinking about next summer. I should be able to make a detour over into your area and spend some time in that beautiful part of the country. For my 50th. we made a valient attempt on Ben Nevis in Scotland (highest Mount. in British Isles). We got turned back about two thirds of the way by heavy rain and fog. Had to spend the rest of the day beside a warm fire in a cozy Scottish Pub. Sometimes life sucks, don't it? I vote for more photos of your adventures in the Adirondacks, when you get time.
