marcphotography
I am trying to figure out the correct way to soft proof with MPIX color profiles. The main think I dont understand is if I need to actually convert to their profile before sending the photo to them. Dont most printers have a larger gamut than sRGB anyways? If I dont have to convert to the printer profile in the end should I have preserve RGB numbers checked? Also, do I need the Paper white and ink black settings checked? This makes my image look washed out.
howard_owen
Don't convert to the printer profile.
Leave Preserve RGB Numbers unchecked in soft proof setup.
Paper white and ink black come closer to showing you the actual contrast of ink on paper (assuming profiles are correctly produced) than your monitor, which has much higher contrast. Use it or not. If you choose to use it, you might want to look away from your monitor when you switch to soft proof mode. That way it's not quite such a slap in the face. howard_owen
One other point: I would advise sending mpix a test image or two. You can get a feel for how accurate your soft proof setup is without paying for an expensive mistake.
