ted_springer
Hi All, Let me try to explain what I'm trying to do: I am trying to use the marquee tool to copy part of a layer (to be later pasted somewhere else). But I want the marquee to "ignore" part of the layer that I'm copying. In other words I only want to copy part of this layer. I tried to use a mask but the marquee tool just seemed to copy right through it. Any suggestions?
tobiasfeltus
ok. photoshop, i assume. Start over. If you have the layer selected, a marquee will copy the layer. if you have a layer mask selected, you can copy the mask. Explain again what you are trying to do directly, as i fear that either your intent or your description is imprecise. t
richsimmons
Sounds like you're trying to move the selection instead of copying and pasting, but you need to give a little more detail about what you're doing.
ronald_moravec1
Refine the selection to what to move. There are many selection tools in PS to do this like lasoo and quick selection.. Another way is to make a dup layer, erase what you do not want, select all, edit copy, edit paste. If there is an active selection and you dup the layer, the selection will form a new layer by itself.
pam_r
It sounds like you are using the wrong tool for the job. Use the lasso tool instead of the marquee tool. This lets you draw a free form selection around the specific area you want to copy. The marquee tool just draws a shape (see example below).

Also, having a mask on a layer only affects those layers beneath the masked layer. It does not change the layer to which it's attached. So having a mask attached to the layer you want to copy will have no effect on what you are copying.
