jeffrey_aiello_photography
Well, I thorougly enjoy my D300, much better than my D200 IMHO. For landscapes, I've been shooting the D300 and my 12-24 DX lens and my 28-72 F/2.8. Well yesterday I made the jump to the D700, ordered it from B&H. I also ordered the 17-55 f/2.8. Hopfully the 700 - 17-55 will be a great combo. I'll post pics when they arrive. Jeff
Rene11664880918
Congrats! Just curios! Why an FX camera (D700) with a DX lens (17-55)? Rene'
james_symington1
"Hopfully the 700 - 17-55 will be a great combo" The 17-55mm is a DX lens and so on the D700 the wide part of the zoom range doesn't cover the sensor fully. The D700 and the 24-70mm is a great combination. I presume you knew this and have another lens you can use for the wide end on the D700?
james_symington1
Or did you mean the 17-35mm f2.8 which is also great on FX?
enw
I sure hope Jeff meant the 17-35mm, if not, he'll be sorely disappointed! B&H is reasonable on returns, though.
carl_becker2
A D700 and 17-35mm f2.8 combination would make me drool. I hope that is what was meant
juanjo_viagran
IF by mistake you order (and the guy from B&H took the order) of a D700 and 17-55mm. IMO_you should call and cancel the 17-55mm and instead for $180 more get the new 24-70mm G _IMO
juanjo_viagran
PS: the $180 more is considering the 17-35mm.
ShunCheung
B&H is closed for 2.5 days (yesterday afternoon, today and tomorrow) for the Jewish new year. If they haven't shipped it, they won't ship until at least Thursday. In the mean time, nobody will answer the phone, either. But you have plenty of time to get this corrected, if necessary. wpahnelas
i think jeffrey probably isn't world's most careful typist (right behind me)... notice "28-72 F/2.8", yet he notes his 12-24 is DX. so he obviously knows the difference. 17-35 makes sense, under the circumstances... jeffrey_aiello_photography
OK.. thanks for pointing this out.. this is what I ordered... Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 D-AFS LENS - NI173528DAFS it does not show anywhere that it is a DX lens.. Is IT??? B&H shows.. as does nikonusa.com that the 17-55 f/208 IS a DX lens.. So.. now that's my heart's starting to beat again.. I think I ordered the correct.. ie. NON-DX lens... wow.. that got my hear pounding!!! josheudowe
Jeff, Would love to hear your comparison between the two when you've had a chance to really use the D700. I shoot landscapes almost exclusively (with the exception of my two young kids!). I've been anxious to hear a real review from and end user/owner. Congrats on the new purchase. Nothing like waiting for the UPS truck delivering something like that! Like being a kid again! Best of luck! Do share.
ShunCheung
Josh, not sure exactly which comparison you want. I have done some preliminary comparison between the D700 w/ 14-24 and 17-35 vs. the D300 w/ 12-24mm/f4. If you need to do a lot of wide angle work, which is common for landscape, having FX is definitely more convenient. The 17-35mm/f2.8 AF-S is a very good wide angle zoom while the 14-24mm/f2.8 is an outstanding wide zoom within its limited range. The 17-35 is more versatile but in the range they overlap, the 14-24 is wonderful. But the D300 with 12-24mm/f4 really holds it own. For shooting building interiors, that lens at 12mm is still very good. At infinity, the edge at 12mm is mediocre.
jeffrey_aiello_photography
Hi Josh, I'm headed to New England at the end of next week to shoot the colors. I'll have about a week of shooting nonstop with both the D700 17-35 and my d300 with the 12-24. I'll be sure to let you know what I thought.. and of course post some pics! best, jeff
james_symington1
Good. You will love your new kit. Just don't drop it onto concrete like I did to mine 4 days after buying it...
Landrum Kelly
Okay, you were excited and made a couple of typos, and we are relieved for you. I'm sure that everyone hopes that you post lots of good pictures. You will love full-frame. --Lannie
jeffrey_aiello_photography
Yeah.. sure hope I love the full frame.. One thing that I like about the D300, is that it's viewfinder has 100% coverage.. from what I've seen, the D700 viewfinder has 95% coverage.. is this an issue for anyone? Rene11664880918
:) That was scary! After I read your post I couldn't wait for a reply coz it was late and I was leaving on a trip early in the morning! I just came back and remembered about it! I'm glad that it was just a typo! :) Have fun in New England! Rene'
