jeff_higdon
Canon has the new EF 24mm f/1.4 II USM on their site this morning (possibly obscured by the excitement over the 5D MkII...) http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=151&modelid=17623
martijn_houtman
Not totally obscured, I am really excited about this lens! Can't wait for the test results!
jean_marc_liotier
I wonder how it compares to the EF 24mm f/1.4L USM - I'm curious about how much it flares...
russel_yee
AHHHH, why is the lens so big? I thought the old lens was too big... why does canon constantly make everything bigger? what a drag. also, I thought that the old 24 1.4 was already superior to all other lenses in the nearby focal lenghts, seems a curious upgrade. Robin Smith
From the blurb one has to assume it has better performance. The original is not known as a stellar performer wide open or close to wide open. I have to say I think emphasizing bokeh always strikes me as a little weird for a 24mm lens, but Canon does have to say something. Maybe Canon can now compete in the superb wide angle stakes? zml
<i>Maybe Canon can now compete in the superb wide angle stakes?</i><br><br>You mean of course "compete with the plethora of other f/1.4 24 mm lenses on the market", right..?<br><br>Pixel-peepers will never be satisfied, but the "real world" users just love this lens. As an aside, I've been a long-time user of the EF (and before that FD) 24/1.4 and this has always been one sweet lens - great color rendition, superb contrast and resolution. If the new version is significantly better, it will be truly stellar.
chrissyone
@ Russel Yee Have you ever used an 85mm 1.2L? When you see the glorious pics, you quickly realize why you're carrying around that bowling ball.
tdigi
I was hoping for something small like the 28 1.8 but wider for my amature status but at least Canon is not over looking the prime lovers. Any other new lenses. I keep hearing about a 24-70 2.8 IS.
alan_bryant1
I'm happy they're releasing a new one, if only because it means I'll probably be able to pick up a used 24/1.4 Mark I at a reasonable price. I would also have been very pleased with a 24/2.0 announcement... but this is better than nothing.
g dan mitchell
At $1700 this seems like a real specialized lens. It will be interesting to see how its performance stacks up against that of the current version. (One wonders whether an excellent 24mm prime with a larger maximum aperture could have been produced at a smaller size and cost, and appealed to more potential buyers.) JDMvW
With 20K+ ISO, the need for an f/1.4 may be perceived as slightly lower than previously.
martijn_houtman
JDM: Heh, true. But nothing beats a good shallow depth-of-field. Yes, even at 24mm.

bernard_odonovan
Over the years I have noticed that Canon's MTF charts correspond well the the average of lens tests. Best take a look at the MTF and compare it to the old lens. You be the judge. This new lens was probably forced on Canon due to compliance with removing lead from electrical products. I have always suspected the original did not have the contact for distance info, so this one has. This is the first lens with the new SWC coating. They have also added more lens elements which makes that all the more important altough the new coating is only on the inside of the front element (where the coating type works best on wide optics). I would love to be proved wrong but I bet people cropping the image with high resolution sensors get better images with the old lens. Lets wait and see. The original is a really hot 24mm, they will keep their value, especially if this one is.... ;-) Better weather sealing also a new feature, although the old one is very well sealed, I guess they have added the lens to body gasket. fotograf
Wonder how much it will cost. I'm seriously considering this lens.
soe_post
Supposedly minimizes ghosting and flares with the new anti-reflective lens coating technology. I can't wait to try it out.
larry h.
I will not be able to afford this new lens, nor do I have a FF camera to fully take advantage of it on. But I just saw the specs on Canon USA's website. Are they serious about a 3.0 inch/77 mm close focusing distance? If so, WOW!
bernard_odonovan
Larry no ''WOW!'' ;-) Canon USA Marketing (the team that put the 50mm F1.2L in their telephoto section when it launched) appear to have copied the filter size, all other sites say it is not 77mm close focus eg: http://www.dcview.com.tw/article/newreadarticle.asp?id=7033 http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091704canon_ef24mm.asp Min focus 25cm = 0.17x Magnification
