No New Nikons Prior to Photokina?

Nikon already announced the D90 and the 18-105mm AF-S VR on August 27 for Photokina:

Earlier that same month (last month, August 2008), Nikon announced a bunch of Coolpix cameras:

And on July 1, Nikon announced the D700, SB-900 and PC-E lenses:

Frankly, that is a lot of announcements and products in merely 2 and half months,

but I have no insider information and cannot say for sure that is it.

I Don't think the 24 Mpixel 'D3' (or even 'D700') can be that far away. Sony just launched the A900 at a price closer to the D700 than to the D3, which should stir things up a bit. Some early (rather flawed) comparisons to the D700 here:

But the current chatter suggests PMA rather than Photokina (though there are plenty of other rumours about medium-format 'MX', rangefinders and so on).

Typically, real product leaks appear 2 to 3 weeks prior to the actual product launch. A lot of the leaks come from the manual printer and brochure printer, as it was the case for the D700. Sometimes company sites accidentally leak information from a subsidery. For example, about a week before the Canon 50D announcement last month, Canon China posted the information on their site. Unfortunately, some auto translation got some of the details wrong. In fact, Bob Atkins, who moderates the Canon EOS Forum, sent me the Canon China link, and I translated the details for him, and that turned out to be 100% accurate (of course, since it came directly from Canon).

Given that there are no credible rumors with some details, such as Thom Hogan's early D90 information:

I kind of doubt that Nikon will have anything else to announce for this Photokina. As I pointed out earlier, they have already announced a lot of new products since July 1.

As far as some of the so called "chatters" go, I think they are merely fabricated by some of the rumor sites to drum up traffic in order to sell advertisements. Otherwise, anybody with a little knowledge about Nikon can figure out that there will be a D4 after the D3, a D5 after the D4 ... (but no F7 after F6 :-) ), and since the D40 is now the oldest DSLR in Nikon's lineup, it'll probably be replaced in 2009 ....

Although I agree that a good number of new Nikon products have recently been announced and launched, I was still hopeful that we would have a 70-200 f/2.8 VR replacement soon. It's been expected and since this lens cannot be found anywhere online except from Amazon for a higher than normal price, I thought that maybe it could be a sign of its replacement. Does anyone have any clue or guess when this new lens will probably be announced?

Thanks Shun! I´ve just bought one! This is the second time you help me to buy a Nikon item! Remember when I was looking for my D300? I live in Brazil and sometimes I have a friend in the US who can bring me what I need. Since my partner is going to the US in a few days and B&H right now has the 70-200 for the correct price I decided to buy it fast! I´m aware of the issues about using this lens on a FX sensor camera but I´m planning to keep shooting with my D300 for many years. So even when Nikon launches the updated version of this lens, I will try to keep myself calm thinking that the latest and greatest not always is the best option. Thanks again and best wishes to all! Saulo.
