james_taylor11
Anyone had a 15mm Canon fisheye repaired? Mine has a few scrathces and I'm wondering if it is possible to replace the front glass, and how much it might cost. Canon wants me to send it in for an estimate, but if it is too expensive I don't want to bother with it. Thanks, James
bobatkins
It's not going to be cheap. The front element of a fisheye lens is a large piece if glass with a fairly complex shape. A few scratches might increase flare under some lighting conditions, but otherwise shouldn't affect the image much. If they are large and deep, it's possible they might also start to come into focus with a fisheye at it's closest focus distance if you stop way down. JDMvW
Sometimes a little black ink in a scratch can help to dampen down flares caused by a front-element scratch; but with fisheyes, as Bob has already pointed out, the danger is that the scratch (and any black ink in it) might even come into focus. Try it with something you can wash off first (try the ink and any solvents on something less expensive first), and you won't have risked anything.
