dezi_cardenas
Has anyone here on the forum bought this camera and are they pleased with it. Thinking of getting one for my daughter as a graduation gift for college. Thanks
john schroeder
Spend a little bit more and get her a D40. The P5100 suffers from too many megapixels crammed onto too small a sensor. The noise levels are just too high on this camera.
elliot1
It is a wonderful camera for a young lady who wants to carry around a nice compact camera in her purse and get really nice snapshots from it. If she has a background in photography and doesn't mind a larger, heavier camera, the D40 would be a better choice.
elliot1
I didn't mean to imply that the camera was not suitable for men... just that it would be a really nice gift for your daughter. The P5100 is a really nice P&S camera for anyone that wants a really nice P&S camera.
alan_wilder1
I bought one for my wife but I'm I'm the one that winds up using it. Generally, it's nice for a P&S digicam but focusing in low light is a big issue and would suggest you try a comparison to other cameras like a Canon before buying the Nikon. photo5
I think Canon still has the edge on Nikon for the small point and shoots. I love my little Canon A620, and for point and shoot pictures, 7.1mp is just fine. And $200 was the right price.
Sanford
As big a Nikon fan as I am, I think the Canon G9 (soon to be g10?) has the edge in most areas except price.
juanjo_viagran
I had the P5100 and my wife have the P50, IMO the P50 or better yet, the new P60 are better choice.. ONE BIG reason IMO: AA batteries, don't need to carry chargers around, you can find AA's ANYWHERE.
rjacksonphoto
Juanjo, Unless, of course, you're doing your part for the environment and using rechargeable AA's...
rjacksonphoto
The P5100 is generally a nice camera but I sold my P5000 to get a G9 and haven't regretted it.
trygve_thorsen4
I am very happy with mine. Use it whenever I do not want to lug a large SLR which means outdoors at low iso settings. Excellent color, detail and easy operation.
gary_watson
The P50--now discounted--is a sweet little p&s.Good ergonomics, AA-powered, solidly-built.
dave_bernard
The P5100 is an underrated camera, capable of great photos. It has a lot of features for the price. There are a few other nice cameras, including the Canon G9 , but the P5100 has a few things over them: Price- the P5100 can be got for $2xx-something, US. Size- the P5100 is truly pocketable, unlike some of its larger, pricier brethren. My dislikes are the abominable lag- really an embarrasing feature in a camera like this. Some people bemoan the lack of raw- in my opinion that is an overrated attraction for a camera such as this, and mostly makes up for a lack of what they call dynamic range. dezi_cardenas
An update! WOW! I bought 2 P5100 ! I gave one to my daughter and got one for myself! A very good P&S digital camera! Very compact!!! Fits in her purse/backpack! All the buttons are very easy to get to! The LCD screen is big enough to see. It takes decent pictures and the videos are top notch! I agree its a very underrated Nikon digital camera. I paid $229.00 + I got her a 4GB SanDisk SDHC card. Awesome little camera! Thanks for all the advice. constance_cook
It is terrific isn't it? I had the P5000 and now the P5100. Great work from Nikon. If you take the care when you shoot it that you do when you use a full sized camera, you will be really impressed. There is a tendency to well, P&S which gets you a snapshot. Shoot it right and it works well. Conni
