DA200mm for shooting wildlife?

Needless to say, I have to be real close or at least closer to the subject (in

comparison to working with 300mm or longer lens). Sometime it is just not

workable at all out in the field. All image uncropped with zero pp.

Daniel,

I think 300MM is not long enough for wildlife. I often miss shots of birds and what not that I try to get closer to.

maybe a 1.4 TC would help....but I am sure there will be a loss of quality.

that being said your first shot is perfect

Christ, Haig..................................................

I only have Kenko 1.5x. It works quite well with AF and the in lens motor as well which was my concern. Likely because of the very thin DoF, I have problem focusing that even manually. But when it is in focus, it is quite ok with the TC which makes it a 300mm. Image uncropped and with no pp of course.........................................................................................

Daniel, I think you are doing extremely well with it. My photos don't look as good even after pp! lol. I should get myself a prime tele, unfortunately I'll have to wait a tad.. trying to rob the bank with my water pistol did not produce any positive results :-) Are you in Toronto by the way? I lived there till 1994.. great city.

If you don't mind a lens on the slow side, I've been using the FA 80-320 f/4.5-5.6 which runs well under $200 used. I think the aperture ring just broke on the one I bought last fall (the auto-aperture seems to be inconsistent as well), but B&H had a used one in good condition for $149, so I bought another. I find the nearly 500mm 35mm equivalent gets me in close. I hope the B&H used model has an IQ that is as good as my previous one. Not quite as good in the IQ department as my DA 50-200 f/4-5.6, but still very, very good compared to any superzoom lens I've used.

Javier: Thanks for taking time to comment.

Haig: Thanks for the compliment. I live in Toronto 404/Finch for 20 yrs. Prime lenses have always been Pentax's plus whereas both Canon/Nikon excel in their prof zooms. The other zoom I use sparingly is Sigma 24-60mmF2.8EX DC

Bryan: Thanks for the heads up. I do have A300mmF4. This week I will do a direct comparion between my 200mmF2.8+15X and A300mmF4. I can only do manual focus as I do not trust my camera AF keeping up with the fast pace of focus tracking (for birds and bird in flight). I need the next K20D super to make full use of the DA*200mm in lens motor.
