riz
Hi, Can anyone advise what to use to remove the rust on the metal plates and for the general cleaning of the plastic body that houses machinery. Regards, Rizwan
ronald_moravec1
sand blast and/or acid etch for the rust. No grinding or sanding will clean it off. Repaint with rust inhibiting primer and paint. TSP that is disolved fully is a decent degreaser. This is a camera forum and you will not necessarily get the best advice here.
subbarayan_prasanna
I use household Ammonia with soap to clean rust. [i presume that you mean rust on steel plates, which is basically ferrous oxide.] Use a clean tooth brush to score out the rust. then wipe off the soap and ammonia with drops of clean water. You may need to use some preservative later, unless you are covering it with leatherette, vinyl etc. If it was a painted surface then you could use enamel paint [metallic paint] with a thin sable hair brush after using masking tape to cover neighboring areas. If you want to clean off and make the surface smooth again you may use use Brasso or similar polish. Take care not apply much on chrome surfaces as they are very thin on cameras. The Brasso will remove the chrome and the brass surface underneath will show. Your nearest automobile spares shop will also sell some rust remover compounds in pasty form. On plastic bodies be very careful. Plain water and soft cloth are the safest. Most synthetic solvents will damage plastic surfaces. Restoring them later is a laborious job, though you can restore cracks etc., with fillers and approproiate sanding and polishing.
subbarayan_prasanna
Your questions are too broadly based. Please raise them with greater detail, specific to the part of the camera that you are focused on. We can answer better.
david_lyga
NAVAL JELLY: any hardware store. Leave it on for ten minutes. It comes in different strengths.
cliffmanley
That's what I use, Navel Jelly. If you don't convert that rust, it will just come back under the new paint.
