What is the best lens for Wedding Photography

Recommended Posts

Hello Friends;

I am going to photograph a wedding as a backup photographer, and I am excited

about it. Now I need to know what is the best lens to have. I will rent it from

lensrental.com. I use Canon 30D and the only two lens I have is the 50mm and the

28-135mm. I was thinking canon-24-70-f2.8-L. Is this a good one or is there a

better lens out there. Please let me know. Thank you as usual.

For a crop sensor, the 17-55 IS 2.8 is probably better suited. That being said, I have and love the 24-70 2.8 on my 40D, and resort to the 17-40L F4 only for specific situations where it is needed.

Of course, a 50 1.4 and a 85 1.8 would probably do the job pretty well too, and sigma/tamron have similar offerings that are fine.

But if you were going to rent just one lens, I'd probably say the 17-55 IS f2.8

As the second photographer, I suggest you ask the lead what is required of you (i.e. what specific tasks you will have.)

Lenses are tools and as such have different uses.

A 17 to 55F2.8IS, agreed, is an excellent choice of main zoom for a 30D for a Wedding Coverage.

But what if your main job is to supplement the lead photographer and to mostly shoot candid Available Light, inconspicuously at distance?

A 70 to 200F2.8IS or 85F1.8 / 135F2L twin Primes set, and your 50mm would be better for that task.
