RAW vs JPG in 40D

I am brand new to digital photography ... my last camer was a Pentax and that

was 35 years ago. I recently bought a 40D and am puzzled about the images.

I have the camera set to RAW only. When I upload the images to my computer,

some are in RAW format while others are in JPG format.

How do the JPG images get there when I have set the camera to RAW only? Is the

image type related to the mode dial setting?

Thanks

There is a good chance that your camera is set on the "RAW + jpg" setting. If so, it writes

both a high quality RAW version and a lower quality jpg version of each shot to the card.

Some people like this because they can easily preview and share the jpgs without going

through RAW conversion, but they still have the highest quality RAW version of the file to

work with.

If you don't need the jpg versions you can change this setting on your camera - sorry,

can't give instructions since I don't have a 40D - and free up a bit more space on the

cards for RAW images.

Do you do any rapid fire shooting? The Rebel series Canon's will take the first shots in RAW, then when it needs more speed, it will drop down to High Quality JPEG.

I find that annoying, I'd rather know I'm missing the shot so that I can adjust my shooting style.
