I want to be a Photographer's Assistant

Recommended Posts

I live in Salt Lake City Utah and purchased a Nikon D300 a few months ago. I

have always been passionate about photography and I would like to pursue it

now. I have been teaching myself photoshop, lightroom, Nikon Capture NX and I

have been reading many books about photography.

I have been wanting to work as an assistant with a photographer to get

experience and learn more about the techniques.

Does anyone know where I could find photographers who need assistants?

I have asked a few photographers (by email) if they would accept me as an

assistant (free of charge) but they never even responded.

Thank you very much.

Hi, In Manhattan some of the labs had bulletin boards with ads on them. There is also Craigslist, want ads, etc. Also make up a book and go around to photographers and try to talk to them in person, good luck on that one. Many photographers have very high opinions of themselves so don't let them get to you, everyone has to start somewhere.

Tino Tedaldi said to me that being a great photographer is not the same as being a great photographers assistant. I don't think you can learn one from the other too easily. it is a bit like a hospital cleaner hoping that some day all that experience will land them a job as a surgeon! - oh and Nivaldo, if you ask for no money at all, it may give the impression you have little value to add. Be confident asking for a nominal expenses fee.

I tried e-mailing several people asking to be an assistant for weddings and heard nothing back. I then phoned one person and will be doing a wedding with him next month.

It's easier to press delete than to say no to someone you're talking to.
