ruth_kohn
i dont think her style ever 'fell out of fashion' but i DO think had she had well known (affluent, most likely) parents in the community the way diane arbus had...maybe some curators would have taken a closer look at her work...and even groomed her for her 15 minutes of fame (which she had, on her own terms, in my opinion...) Not everybody needs to move in the direction of fine arts, and that was not jill's choice, as it did become diane arbus's choice, and she didnt even get discovered until someone else printed her images with those (for then!) unique edges...which diane later adopted herself, and often MADE her prints...(if you saw her show at nyu not too long ago, those contacts were god awful...as some curators even articulated at the time...) back to jill, glad to hear she is back in the city she obviously missed...i never did understand why she picked up and went to florida where b/w gritiness is not for the faint of heart, or those who have been known to have blond, sunny dispositions...My husband back then was shocked to discvoer jill's prints of cats for sale at some flea market...he had remembered her from her maccann ericson days, and thought she had fallen...On the up and UP side, her prints were always amazing, and yes she did influence us all, and gave new photographers a reason to hang in there in the darkroom...I loved her irish prints seen in a gallery in the apple not too long ago, and spotted her coming out of the gallery looking light as day, though older, like the rest of us weathered nyc photographers... sad to hear about her health issues, and hope its in the past, and glad to hear she is at it again, and getting the attention her work surely deserves...I still remember she was the only female photographer that even cornell capa could yield to...she was probably also not taking shit from patronizing men who thought they were top shit back when...we surely dont hear their names these days, so much the better, since they could not ever stand up to her glorious images...when the lady was good, she was tops... keep at it, girl, and never mind the flaky media types...in the apple they make a lot of noise, and after all it aint D.C. and your work is there in LIFE MAGAZINE, AINT IT. STAY COOL, I AM ROOTING FOR YA...ruth.
